police training in addition01/16/2008 My daughter is beginning her senior year of high school. She has taken her entrance exams for college and we have filled out the financial aid packets. She has talked about several career options, but has not made a firm decision on which profession she wants to get involved in. I was surprised when I noticed pamphlets on police training with her other college materials. The school had a career fair, so I just thought she had picked up the police training materials with everything else. What you are about to read is the culmination of information from many different places and resources. I hope you enjoy it. A few days after the career fair my daughter was sitting at the family computer. I asked her what she was working on and she told me that she was looking up information on police training. She was interested to know where the closest police training academy was. I sat down by her to discuss this further. She had never voiced any interest in law enforcement in the past and so I wanted to know why she had become interested consequently. She shared that she has always been interested in law enforcement television shows and that her favorite novels to read are usually crime dramas. She also is fascinated by crime scene investigation and solving mysteries. She feels that eventually she would like a legal career, but she would like to learn more about what is needed for police training by the same token. I have worked in social services for years so I regularly cross paths with police detectives and deputy sheriffs. I told her that if she was serious about pursuing this that I would make her an appointment to talk with one of them. She was very interested in doing this and asked if I could do this as soon as possible. The next day I spoke with one of the detectives that investigate child protection issues. He said that he would be happy to talk with my daughter. He told me that his wife is also a detective for another jurisdiction; he thought it might be helpful for my daughter to hear about police training from a woman’s point of view also. It turns out that the detective and his wife do not live too far from us. We arranged that they would come over the next night for dessert and to talk to my daughter not a moment too soon. My daughter did a great job of preparing questions to ask the detectives. She wanted to know about basic police training as well as a criminal justice degree. She also had many questions about advanced training and the ability to specialize within a department. Both detectives had received their four year criminal justice degree and had then taken the police training course, which concentrates more on the fundamentals and weapons. They told my daughter that some officers do the police academy first and then work their way through college with a part time law enforcement job in similar fashion. I am not sure what decision my daughter will make regarding the police training. I do know that she seems very focused and that she now has first had information to help her in her decision making for an instant. I hope you have gotten some good ideas from this article and that you are able to use them. |
